Indigenous Solidarity Day on Oregon campus

Monday was Indigenous Solidarity Day at the University of Oregon, an event that brought out students, tribal leaders and activist John Trudell.

Mark Franco, the headman of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe in California, spoke about his tribe's struggles with the federal government. Trudell, a spoken-word poet, gave a performance and held a two-hour talk with former Cherokee Nation chief Wilma Mankiller.

The day was sponsored by the Native American Student Union, the Multicultural Center and the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics. Mankiller is the Wayne Morse Chair of Law and Politics.
