Alaska Native villages are attempting to recover after a powerful storm hit the western coast last week and caused major damage.
The storm eroded beachfront land, flooded homes, washed out roads, overwhelmed a sewer system and caused some loss of power, The Anchorage Daily News reported. Some 34 communities were affected.
In Newtok, 5 to 10 feet of the beachfront disappeared. The storm carried away a 1,000-gallon fuel tank along with other items and equipment.
The state and the villages plan to declare the area a disaster
