Blackfeet Nation bans tobacco in public places

The Blackfeet Nation of Montana has banned smoking and spit tobacco in all public places.

The tribe passed the Blackfeet Tobacco Free Act to recognize the harmful effects of tobacco and to protect public health. The law still recognizes the traditional aspect of tobacco use.

Last year, the tribe started a tobacco cessation program. Studies show that Native Americans use tobacco at the highest rates in the nation.
