The Navajo Nation Council opened its summer session on Monday, hearing from Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. and encountering a protest from tribal members who oppose a power plant on the reservation.
Shirley gave the State of the Navajo Nation in the morning. He urged the passage of a law to overhaul the tribe's education, The Farmington Daily Times reported.
As the session began, tribal members voiced their objections to a $2 billion coal-fired power plant. The Dooda Desert Rock Power Plant Committee says the plant will harm the environment.
