Four tribes are planning to seek recognition from the state of South Carolina.
The Chicora Indian Tribe of South Carolina, Natchez-Pee Dee Tribe, Beaver Creek Indians and Piedmont American Indian Association Lower Eastern Cherokee Nation have to apply by September 1. They are required to prove their ancestry and history.
The Minority Affairs Commission of South Carolina has recognized two tribes so far. Two tribes have been designated as Indian groups while two more were denied recognition.
