Wake Forest University in North Carolina is hoping to attract more Native students, having just hosted the 26th annual N.C. Indian Youth Unity Conference.
With over 270 Native students attending the conference, the school used the event to reach out to potential students. Currently, the school only has 20 enrolled Native Americans, including the nine Native students who are part of the incoming freshman class.
Native Americans make up 1.1 percent of the state's population. Many attend UNC Pembroke, a school funded for Lumbee Indians in 1887. About 20 percent of the student population there is Native.
