Alabama panel takes input on recognition standards


The Alabama Indian Affairs Commission held a public hearing on Tuesday to discuss the state's recognition criteria.

Tribal groups said the standards are too strict, The Montgomery Advertiser reported. But commission members said the criteria shouldn't be watered down to help any particular group.

Some state tribes are seeking legislation to go around the process.
