Cabazon Band not planning to liquidate some assets

The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians is not planning to liquidate some of its assets, leaders of the financially-strapped California tribe tell Indian Country Today.

On May 7, The Palm Springs Desert Sun reported that the tribe was planning to some of the equipment from its disbanded police and fire department. But those ideas were "sound bites that the press just ran with," Second Vice Chairman Marc Benitez tells ICT.

Benitez reaffirmed that the tribe is not nearing bankruptcy but that it will take a year to sort out the mess. He confirmed that three top officials were recently fired due to ''spending patterns by management'' that caused financial problems.
