Leaders of the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians say the tribe that helped pave the way for the expansion of tribal gaming is not about to go bankrupt.
Instead, the tribe is taking steps to make sure things don't get that bad, said chairman John James and second vice chairman Marc Benitez. The police force and fire department were disbanded, three top executives were fired after irregularities surfaced and expansion plans have been halted.
The tribe now plans a liquidation of its police and fire equipment in hopes of raising cash."We felt like someone just torpedoed the Titanic, so we need to restructure, tighten our belt and remain confident," James told The Palm Springs Desert Sun.
