Gerard Baker, a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation, is probably the highest ranking Native American in the National Park Service.
Baker is the first Indian superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Monument in South Dakota. He accepted the post a year ago after overseeing the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma, the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana and the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail.
Baker says his role is to educate the public about Indian history. He plans to make Indian viewpoints more prominent at Mount Rushmore, located in the sacred Black Hills, but that change will come in "baby steps."
