The Federal Way School Board in Washington voted 4-0 on Tuesday to approve the naming of a new school after Sequoyah, the Cherokee citizen who developed a syllabary for the Cherokee language.
Students at the new school overwhelmingly supported the name. District policy is to choose names for people, places or events from Native American literature.
Some local tribal members wanted the school named after Robert Satiacum, the late but controversial leader of the Puyallup Tribe. A policeman killed in the line of duty was also suggested by he was not Native.
