A proposed settlement to allow the continued operation of two hog farms on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation is drawing opposition from tribal members, local ranchers and outside groups.
Concerned Area Rosebud Citizens, the Humane Farming Association and the South Dakota Peace and Justice Center intervened in a lawsuit over the proposed expansion of the farm operation. They groups say a proposed settlement to the dispute will not address health and environmental concerns.
To settle the case, the Rosebud Sioux Tribe has agreed to allow Sun Prairie to continue to operate two large hog farms but the company had to agree to drop expansion plans and make other payments to the tribe.
