A settlement has been reached to allow the continued operation of two large hog farms on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota but the deal would prevent any expansion.
The Rosebud Sioux Tribe, the federal government and Sun Prairie, the operator of the hog farms, agreed to a number of conditions affecting the farms.
In exchange for continued operation, Sun Prairie is giving up leases to expand to 11 more sites.
The deal also sets out the terms of payments to the tribe for rent and water use. Sun Prairie has agreed to certain environmental measures.
The settlement has to be approved by a federal judge.
