A former Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer was sentenced to jail, ordered to stay away from his wife and was told to become a role model for Lakota youth after pleading guilty to simple assault domestic violence.

Patrick Swallow, 36, was serving on a BIA drug enforcement team at the time of the October 2003 incident. His wife, Genevieve Swallow, said he threatened to kill her and kill himself with a handgun.

As a result of his guilty plea, Swallow will lose his ability to carry a firearm and serve as a law enforcement officer, The Rapid City Journal reports. He was sentenced to 12 months in jail, with 8 months suspended. Genevieve Swallow plans to seek a divorce, the paper said.
