NPS won't designate Devils Tower as sacred site

The National Park Service has dropped a proposal to designate Devils Tower National Monument as the Bear Lodge Historic Landmark in recognition of its use as a sacred site.

The proposal drew objections from Wyoming's Congressional delegation and area residents. Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-Wyoming) introduced a bill to block the designation.

NPS still plans on reviewing a policy that discourages climbers from scaling Devils Tower during the month of June, when tribal members hold ceremonies. The policy could be strengthened, the monument's chief ranger said.
