The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a hearing next month on a bill affecting an off-reservation casino in California.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) wants the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians to undergo a lengthy review for the off-reservation casino in the Bay Area. She says the state and local communities need to be consulted.
Amid opposition, the tribe dropped plans for Class III gaming and the site and intends to install Class II games. But Feinstein wants to block the tribe until the review occurs.
Feinstein's bill is S.113. It would modify the acquisition of the tribe's land in San Pablo to force a two-part determination that requires federal approval and the state governor's concurrence.
The hearing is scheduled for April 5.
