The Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana filed a lawsuit in state court on Friday accusing the Roman Catholic Church and the St. Labre Indian School Educational Association of exploitation.
The tribe says the church and the school have raised millions by marketing the tribe's poverty. Yet little of the money actually goes to the reservation, the lawsuit claims.
The tribe wants the school to open its books and pay damages. The lawsuit cites trespassing, lack of compensation for the use of the reservation, imposing religions on the tribe and use of tribal history without permission.
