Tribally-controlled university seeks federal funds

Officials with Si Tanka University in South Dakota hope their financial problems will end with the help of the federal government.

Si Tanka used to be eligible for federal funds under the Tribally Controlled College Assistance Act. But when the school purchased Huron University, a non-Indian institution located off the reservation, its Indian enrollment fell below 50 percent. That meant Si Tanka lost out an estimated $1.4 million.

Officials are restructuring the college to qualify for the money again. Other tribal colleges are in the same situation because non-Indian enrollment is on the rise.

Huron University had financial problems long before being acquired by Si Tanka.
