Bureau of Indian Affairs head Dave Anderson "very definitely" plans to say for President Bush's second term, the assistant secretary says in an interview with the Associated Press.
"I think this is an incredible opportunity to get some things done," he says. "One of the reasons I'm here is to help create the change that's needed in the Bureau."
Anderson has endured calls for his resignation by critics of the BIA because he recused himself from all gaming and recognition matters. But he tells the AP that he takes "issue with people who try to say that gaming is the only high priority in Indian country."
"I would say a great majority of the tribes are not in areas where gaming would be a significant economic base for them," he says. "When we are in meetings with tribes, the tribes tell us their priorities are law enforcement, health, education, infrastructure and administration of the tribes."
Anderson joined the Bush administration in February 2004.
