Navajo Nation Council fails to vote on water deal

The Navajo Nation Council failed to vote on a proposed water settlement with the state of New Mexico and the federal government.

The vote was to take place on Wednesday but after hours of debate, delegates walked out as the 200-page document was being read into the record. The council then adjourned due to a lack of a quorum.

The agreement would settle the tribe's claims on the San Juan River. The tribe would get about 600,000 acre-feet of water a year, which some believe is not enough. A $328 million irrigation project supported by tribal leaders was removed but a $564.6 million pipeline to a non-reservation community that some oppose was kept.
