Mohawk tribes announce land claim settlement

The three Mohawk plaintiffs in the Mohawk land claim announced a settlement with the state of New York on Wednesday.

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, the Mohawk Council Nation of Chiefs and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne from Canada filed suit over 11,000 acres. They will now share a $100 million settlement, $70 million from the New York Power Authority and $30 million from the state.

The tribes will get 215 acres and two islands. In addition, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe would have the right to buy up to 14,478 acres for a restored reservation. Two counties where the land is located would get $10 million to offset tax revenue.

The deal is not tied to cigarette or gasoline taxes, an issue the derailed an earlier agreement. Also, the settlement does not include a gaming compact for a casino in the Catskills.
