Ted Stevens says tribes thought of consolidation

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) spoke at a special session of the Tanana Chiefs Conference on Tuesday.

TCC, which represents Interior tribes, called the meeting to address the regionalization or consolidation of federal and state services. Tribal leaders are opposed to the idea if it means taking away control from their local governments.

But Stevens said there aren't enough resources to fund more than 220 villages and tribes. He said that TCC asked for regionalization when he wrote legislation to allow the organization to contract health care and other programs.
