The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians of California wants to turn several hundred acres of land into a housing and country club development but area residents say the project will destroy their way of life.
The tribe is buying 745 acres from "Davy Crockett" actor Fess Parker. According to the Associated Press, Parker turned to the tribe because his efforts to develop the land on his own were stymied.
But if the land is taken into trust, the tribe can pretty much do what it likes, a prospect that has locals worried. "What concerns me is there's a group of people that is able to operate different than the rest of the community, and that strikes me as wrong," one resident told the AP.
