Non-Indians question Omaha Tribe's jurisdiction

Officials in Thurston County, Nebraska, are wary of an agreement that will recognize the Omaha Tribe's law enforcement powers.

The state and the tribe are working out an agreement that would allow the tribe to arrest non-Indians in the county. Non-Indians would be tried in state courts while Indians would be tried in tribal court.

But county officials say they are being excluded from the talks. They say the Omaha Reservation has been diminished and that the tribe lacks authority in certain areas.
