More and more tribes and Indian organizations are looking to establish charter schools that emphasize tribal culture.
According to the Center for Education Reform, there are 30 Indian charter schools in the country in Arizona, California, Minnesota, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, Washington and other states. More schools are in the works in Oregon, Wyoming and in Alaska.
By focusing on tribal culture, history and language, charter schools can help Indian students excel. The Barona Indian Charter School in California saw big gains standardized tests last year, beating the state average.
Charter schools often receive federal funding but don't have to follow all the rules and regulations for public schools.
