President Bush on Monday nominated Carlos M. Gutierrez, the Cuban-born chief executive of the Kellogg cereal company, as Secretary of Commerce.
The selection of Gutierrez surprised many. Although he is known for reshaping Kellogg into a top company, he is not a Washington insider and is not close to Bush like other recent nominees.
At a press conference yesterday, Bush said Gutierrez would work to help more minorities and women start small businesses. Gutierrez replaces Donald Evans, who resigned.
