Secretary of State Colin Powell, the first African-American to hold the post, resigned today, one of four resignations expected by the White House.
News reports said Powell, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, Education Secretary Rod Paige and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham have tendered their resignations. They join Attorney General John Ashcroft and Commerce Secretary Don Evans as the Cabinet members to depart.
Powell said he will leave office once a replacement is selected. The others plan to leave on a staggered basis.
