The Golden Hill Paugussett Tribe of Connecticut has appealed the Bureau of Indian Affairs' denial of federal recognition.
The tribe claims the decision was not about the facts but about "politics and power." The appeal claims the BIA made mistakes in the handling the tribe's recognition petition.
The BIA, in a June decision, said the tribe didn't satisfy four of seven recognition criteria. The tribe failed to prove descent from a historical tribe and failed to show political and social continuity, the BIA said.
