Assistant secretary Dave Anderson spoke to incoming students at Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas on Tuesday.
According to The Lawrence Journal-World, Anderson urged students to become political active. He said the Republican Nation Convention underway this week showcases minorities and "all kinds of white people" but not Native Americans.
"We don't vote," he was quoted as saying with a tone of disgust. The paper didn't say whether Anderson mentioned that two tribal leaders addressed the Democratic National Convention and that two young Natives sang the national anthem in Tohono O'odham for the Democrats.
Students said they welcomed Anderson's message. "I heard him at commencement," Leroy Silva told the paper. "He motivated me then, and now he's motivated me again."
