The Pala Band of Mission Indians filed a ballot initiative on Monday to stop a proposed landfill in San Diego County.
The tribe says the $60 million landfill on 1,770 acres in Gregory Canyon will pollute the San Luis Rey River. The proposed site is located near two sacred sites, Gregory Mountain and Medicine Rock.
The tribe needs 66,000 signatures of registered voters in the county to put the issue on the November ballot. The initiative would overturn one that authorized the landfill.
