Feinstein trying to mediate settlement with tribe

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she is trying to mediate a settlement between the Hoopa Valley Tribe and a water district.

Feinstein met with tribal leaders earlier this week to discuss the dispute. The tribe supports a Clinton administration decision to restore flows to the Trinity River, used for fishing and subsistence. But the Westlands Water District opposes any reduction in water.

The tribe has treaty rights on the river and blames declining runs of salmon on low water levels.
