The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has developed a plan to fight the West Nile Virus, which killed two tribal members recently and has hit other reservations.
The tribe will use a $100,000 state block grant to address prevention, education, and cleanup on the reservation. The tribe will conduct aerial spraying, provide repellent to tribal members and provide animal vaccines to ranchers.
Last year, Native Americans in South Dakota made up 19 percent of all West Nile Virus cases in the state even though they are only 9 percent of the population.
