Several people who claim to have Pechanga ancestry held a protest on Monday against the Pechanga Band of Mission Indians.
The group wants the financially-successful tribe to lift a moratorium on new enrollments. They say they are entitled to a monthly per capita payment, reported to be $15,000 per member.
One of the protesters, Joe Liska, filed a lawsuit to stop the per capita payments, saying the tribe never submitted a plan to the Department of Interior. The tribe failed to respond to the suit and a default judgment was entered for Liska.
But the tribe's plan appears to have been recently approved, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports.
