"Indian tribes have launched a multimillion-dollar campaign to convince New Yorkers that the tax law violates their 'sacred treaties.' This is a smoke screen. In 1994, the Supreme Court ruled it was constitutional for New York to tax Indian sales to non-Indians. The ads never point out that the tribes are simply afraid of losing their $625 million-a-year enterprise.

We understand the special historical circumstances that surround Native Americans. But that history should not be used to discriminate against store owners, many of them recent immigrants struggling to achieve the American Dream."
