California regulators are looking at another tribal-owned business that provides cost-effective
workers' compensation insurance to off-reservation companies.
The California Department of Insurance is investigating Independent Staffing Solutions.
Regulators say the Fort Independence Indian Community is not abiding by state law regarding
workers insurance.
The tribe says it has a sovereign right to operate the business free of state interference. Companies turn to the tribe due to the high cost of insurance.
The Blue Lake Rancheria operates a similar business and has sued the state.
