Calif. agency asserts right to regulate tribe's business
Friday, January 9, 2004

The California Insurance Commission filed court papers in state court on Wednesday asserting the right to regulate a business owned by the Blue Lake Rancheria.

State regulators say the tribe's company must comply with state workers' compensation laws. The company, Mainstay Business Solutions, offers an inexpensive alternative to costly workers' insurance that businesses in the state are required to purchase.

The tribe says the state can't enforce its laws on the company.
