Lawmakers take up Tohono O'odham off-reservation casino bills
Tuesday, January 25, 2011
Lawmakers in Arizona are debating bills this afternoon in hopes of stopping the Tohono O'odham
Nation from opening an off-reservation casino.
The House and the Senate have fast-tracked bills that would allow the city of Glendale to annex the tribe's land without tribal consent.
Lawmakers believe annexation will prevent the Bureau of Indian Affairs from placing the land into trust.
The tribe acquired land near Glendale in 2003. The city annexed part of the property but the Bureau of Indian Affairs has agreed to place another part in trust.
