A 'milestone': Tule River Tribe moves forward with casino plan

The Tule River Tribe is welcoming public input on its casino relocation plan in California.

Comments on a long-awaited environmental impact statement are being accepted through November 5, according to a notice published in the Federal Register. A public meeting will take place October 15, The Porterville Recorder reported.

“The Tule River Tribe has spent years working on Eagle Mountain Casino’s potential relocation,” Chairman Neil Peyron told the paper. “Today we have reached a milestone and we look forward to soliciting public comment on our relocation.”

The tribe plans to move the Eagle Mountain Casino to a 40-acre site near the Porterville Airport Industrial Park. The site is less than 20 miles from the existing facility.

The tribe is pursuing the project under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. That means both the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the state governor must approve it.

Local officials support the move.
