Six tribes are creating nearly 3,000 jobs as they expand their casinos in southern California, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The
Barona Band of Mission Indians, the
Pala Band of Mission Indians, the
Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, the
San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians, the
Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation
and the
Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians are all hiring more people as they update their facilities, the paper said.
“Wow, if any company were coming into town saying they’re going to create 3,000 jobs, we’d be jumping up and down,” Phil Blair, the president of staffing agency Manpower, told The Union-Tribune.
Three of the expansions are debuting in the next two months. The Viejas Band is hiring 750 people as it puts the finishing touches on a
new hotel tower that opens at the
Viejas Casino and Resort on February 1.
The Barona Band is expected to finalize an expansion of the
Barona Resort and Casino next month as well. The exact number of jobs being created hasn't been reported, according to the paper.
The Pechanga Band is hiring 750 people for the expansion of the
Pechanga Resort and Casino. The $300 million project, which includes a
14-story, 568-room hotel that already opened last month, hosts a grand opening in March with a concert by rock legend Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.
Further down the line, the Pala Band continues work on a
$170 million expansion and renovation at the
Pala Casino Resort and Spa. Some 200 jobs will be created when the project is completed next year.
The Sycuan Band is putting 700 more people to work at the
Sycuan Casino. The $226 million project includes a
12-story, 300-room hotel and is due to open in 2019 as well.
Finally, the San Pasqual Band will be creating 80 new jobs as part of a $50 million expansion at the
Valley View Casino and Hotel, The Union-Tribune reported.
