Tonto Apache Tribe brings unusual food item to casino for annual festival

The Tonto Apache Tribe hosted the third annual Testicle Festival at its casino in Arizona last weekend.

Yes, testicles, as in those from a cow, pig or sheep. The tribe ordered 150 pounds of the unusual food item for the event, the hospitality director for the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino told The Payson Roundup.

“It’s the tribe’s idea,” Mike Kitts told the paper. “They did it when I first got here in 2004, then they quit, but the tribe wanted it to come back.”

But for those not wishing to enjoy a Rocky Mountain oyster -- some say it tastes like chicken -- there were other, more palatable options. The event also featured a barbecue competition that drew cooking teams from all over the nation, the paper reported.

The casino is busy again this weekend as the tribe celebrates its 45th annual Recognition Days. The event commemorates the tribe's federal recognition through an act of Congress in 1972. The casino is also marking its 24th anniversary.
