Shakopee Tribe on track to finish big casino expansion in time for Super Bowl

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is set to complete a $90 million casino expansion project in time for the Super Bowl in 2018.

The tribe is adding a nine-story hotel with 180 rooms and a 70,000-square-foot convention center to the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel. The project is due to open by January 1, according to a countdown timer on Mystic Lake Center website.

The expansion will bring the total number of rooms at the facility to 766, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. Only one other hotel, in nearby Minneapolis, is bigger, the paper said.

But the project isn't the only big item on the tribe's agenda. Mystic Lake will host a "pop-up" entertainment venue during the Super Bowl next year in hopes of luring more patrons to the reservation.

The 64,000 square-foot Club Nomadic will feature performances from February 1-4, 2018, according to a press release. The venue is being programmed by the same team that hosted a pop-up during the 2017 Super Bowl in Houston, Texas.

“It was the most talked about venue in the city the weeks leading up to the big game and we intend to exceed that level of vigor in cooperation with the team at Mystic Lake to deliver great entertainment and an unmatched nightlife experience to the region,” Nomadic Entertainment Group president Jack Murphy said in the press release.

Super Bowl LII will be played on February 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis. Mystic Lake is about 27 miles south of the stadium.
