Bureau of Indian Affairs confirms Wilton Rancheria casino site in trust

The Wilton Rancheria is moving forward with a long-awaited gaming development in northern California after clearing a big hurdle.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs placed the 36-acre site of the propose casino in trust on February 10, The Sacramento Bee reported. The decision, which was years in the making, came in spite of a lawsuit that sought to delay the acquisition.

The casino will be located in the city of Elk Grove, at the site of an outlet mall under development. A land agreement related to that project has been rescinded and some believe it could affect the tribe's plans.

The tribe must still negotiate a compact with the state in order to offer slot machines, table games and similar Class III games.
