The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians shared more than $883,000 in gaming revenues with the local community in Michigan.

Under a consent decree in federal court, the tribe shares 2 percent of slot machine revenues with non-profits, charities and governmental units, including public schools, in a six-county area. Distributions occur twice a year -- in the winter and the summer.

“As you know we don't accept tax dollars so this goes a long way to helping us meet the need of our neighbors,” Deb Haase, the executive director of the Father Fred Foundation, one of the recipients of a tribal grant, told 9 and 10 News.

Since 1994, the tribe has shared nearly $34 million with the community, The Traverse Ticker reported.
