The Kalispel Tribe of Washington announced the acquisition of a golf club for $3 million.

The Spokane Country Club will now be called the Kalispel Golf and Country Club. A frog was added to the logo in a nod to its significance in tribal culture.

"In Indian culture, the frog represents transformation, renewal and rebirth," Phil Haugen, a tribal member who serves as the manager of the Northern Quest Resort and Casino, said at a press conference on Thursday, The Inlander reported. "The frog is proof of health and balance in any ecosystem."

The club boosts the amenities offered for patrons of the off-reservation casino, located about 14 miles away in Airway Heights. The acquisition helps the facility stay competitive in the event the Spokane Tribe opens its own gaming facility.

The proposed West Plains Mixed-Use Development, also in Airway Heights, includes a hotel and retail options but not a golf course.

The Kalispels oppose the Spokane casino, whose fate lies in the hands of Gov. Jay Inslee (D). He has veto authority under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
