The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe are seeing interest in their proposed gaming facility.

The city council in East Hartford voted 7-1 to respond to the request for proposals released by the two tribes. A developer wants to convert the site of a vacant movie theater into a new casino.

At least two other communities are interested in a casino. East Windsor and Windsor Locks would face a November 6 deadline to respond to the tribal RFP, issued through a new entity known as MMCT Venture.

The Windsor Locks site would be at the Bradley International Airport, according to news reports. The head of the Connecticut Airport Authority supports a casino there.

After receiving proposals, the two tribes plan to select a site by the end of December. Then they would ask the Connecticut Legislature to approve the casino.

The development would be located near the Massachusetts border. MGM Resorts International is building what was billed as an $800 million facility in downtown Springfield, just a few miles from the state line.

The company, though, plans to reduce the size of the project by 14 percent, WFSB reported. The hotel at the site was already revised, drawing complaints from some local officials.

MGM is also suing the state of Connecticut for enacting Senate Bill 1090. The complaint contends the law is unconstitutional because only the tribes are able to operate the potential new casino. The state is seeking to have the case dismissed.
