Charles Wood, the newly-elected chairman of the Chemehuevi Tribe in California, wants to open a new casino on the reservation.

Wood said there aren't enough jobs for tribal members. Building a casino could help alleviate the situation.

“I want to see us break ground in the next year,” Woods told The Havasu News . “Part of the goal is to create jobs so people can return to the reservation.”

Details are scarce but Wood is looking at a site along the Colorado River. The tribe already operates the Havasu Landing Resort and Casino in the same area.

The tribe also owns land in Barstow where a proposed off-reservation casino was rejected by the Bush administration. Wood wants to develop the site although he did not specifically mention gaming.
