The Seminole Tribe of Florida gained preliminary approval to enter the gaming market in New Jersey.

The New Jersey Casino Control Commission issued a statement of compliance to Seminole Hard Rock Entertainment at a special meeting on Thursday. The decision enables the tribe to operate a casino in Atlantic City or engage in gaming at a racetrack where it owns an 16 percent stake, should that become legal in the future.

James Allen, the CEO of the tribally-owned Hard Rock International, didn't disclose plans for a specific project at the meeting, the Associated Press reported. But he said the tribe remains interested in the Revel Casino Resort, which closed last year.

“We’ve certainly been looking at Revel, going back to our inception,” Allen told the AP. “It’s an amazing building, but it does have some challenges.”
