The board of supervisors in Gogebic County, Michigan, voted 5-1 to support an off-reservation casino for the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.

The tribe plans to buy a portion of the Indianhead Mountain Ski Resort and build a $22 million casino there. Supporters believe the project will create jobs and revenues for the community.

The tribe will have to submit a land-into-trust application for the site. If the Bureau of Indian Affairs approves, the state governor would get veto authority under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The tribe already operates the Lac Vieux Desert Resort and Casino. The facility is about 46 miles away from the new gaming site.
