Arizona newspaper accuses the Tohono O'odham Nation of playing tricks in its pursuit of an off-reservation casino:
At this point in the casino debate, let's face it: The Tohono O'Odham and their political friends are welcome to their celebration. The tribe successfully duped state voters in 2002, having participated, dishonestly, in an ad campaign that assured voters no additional casinos would be built in Maricopa County. And they duped their fellow Native Americans, who believed the revenue streams generated by the existing Maricopa County tribal casinos would finally provide real economic opportunity for local tribes. So far, at least, the duping and dodging and deception has proved astonishingly successful. For Tohono O'Odham Chairman Ned Norris Jr. and his league of West Valley hangers-on, there was plenty to celebrate. But regarding Norris' contention at the ground-breaking that "We played by the rules" — well, there is just so much self-serving sanctimony one can stomach.Get the Story:
