Coeur d'Alene Tribe questions gaming at non-Indian racetracks

Instant Racing terminals from AmTote International

The Coeur d'Alene Tribe of Idaho is questioning the addition of electronic gaming machines at non-Indian racetracks.

Greyhound Park and Les Bois Park are installing hundreds of "Instant Racing" machines. The devices allow players to place bets that are linked to past horse races.

The tribe's representatives, however, say the machines are glorified slot terminals. “It’s an economic threat to the tribe, no question about it, if you have that kind of gaming,” lobbyist Bill Roden told The Spokesman Review.

Lawmakers approved new forms of betting at racetracks last year. But some are surprised by the machines that are showing up in the state.

"We probably have buyers’ remorse from having passed the statute not knowing what exactly was involved," Rep. Tom Loertscher (R) told the paper. "Shame on us for doing that.”

“I believe it’s pretty clear that they misrepresented what they sold the legislators last year,” added Helo Hancock, the tribe's legislative liaison.
